Existing Building Commissioning Workshop Series 18 Materials

Picture
As indicated on the main page, the true source for the materials for the existing building commissioning class workshop is the FTP site Ryan maintains.  If you need information regarding how to access it, you should contact him via e-mail at [email protected].  It would be desirable to include the words "EBCx Workshop Series Materials FTP Site Access" in the subject line to catch his attention.

The materials below are the materials I provide for the portions of the workshop that I teach.   I am going to keep placing them here so that you can access them before class if you want and also to make it easy for Ryan to pull them back for the FTP site.
Note that I frequently include a "READ ME" file in the zip file with the materials and resources that describes what each of the files is about.

The files below are the files I will be using in class today.  You will also need to have:
  1. A version of SketchUp (viewer preferred) installed on a desktop or mobile device.   Information was provided in the pre-class e-mails and can also be found on the Hijend Hotel Models and Videos section of the Blog Support page of this site.
  2. A version of the Hijend Hotel models, which can also found on the Hijend Hotel Models and Videos section of the Blog Support page of this site.  Instructions to help you decide which version is best suited to the version of SketchUp you are using and the platform you are running it on are also included.
  3. The documents associated with the different systems we will be working with in the Hijend Hotel, which were shared in the pre-class e-mails but can also be found in the Hijend Hotel Documents section of the Blog Support page of this site.

FOLLOW UP
  1. The .pdf of the e-mail below is a copy of the e-mail Ryan sent you after class that provides instructions for the system diagram exercise.
  2. The Berkely Labs website that allows you to benchmark a lab building is at this link.
  3. The file ebcx_18-02_v3_class.pdf are the marked up slides from the class, including the answer for the system diagram exercise in slides 59 and 60.
  4. The paper I mentioned by Steve Taylor about why enthalpy controlled economizers don't work and advocating for the fixed dry bulb temperature approach is at this link.
  5. A paper describing the ASHRAE Radiant Time Series (RTS) load calculation approach can be found at this link.  The spreadsheet ASHRAE developed that allows you to perform the calculation can be purchased for about $40 at this link.

CHILLED WATER SYSTEM DIAGRAM DEVELOPMENT EXERCISE

For this exercise, I am going to encourage that you try hand-drawing the system diagram for a number of reasons.
  • This is a good way to start no matter how you plan to make your final drawing.
  • Some people simply are not comfortable using electronic drawing techniques like CAD or MS Office shapes and I want to emphasize that there is nothing wrong with a hand drawn system diagram using a pencil and paper.
In the olden days, I literally did my first drafts with pencil on paper.  Sometimes, the final draft would also be pencil on paper because it was a good compromise between presentation and the time it took to produce it.  In my case, I found that if I used graph paper, my line quality and printing was presentable enough for a final draft without having to get out the parallel bar, tee-square, triangles, compasses, French curves, etc.

Now, my pencil is frequently an iPencil and my paper is my iPad with the benefit being that it is as fast and easy for me as paper and pencil, but it can be easily reproduced, I can copy and paste symbols, and i can re-arrange things to improve the draft with out erasing things or starting over again.  Here is an example from a recent project.
Picture
Point being, there is nothing wrong with hand drawn system diagrams, and I am hoping this exercise gives you a chance to try it out, be it with a paper and pencil or an iPad an iPencil.  Along these lines, there is a short video you can watch about hand drawn system diagrams and symbols available at this link.
FOLLOW UP INFORMATION
These are the files I mentioned providing.  The zip triple duty valves and circuit setters zip file contains a number of documents that illustrate the features, construction and performance curves for these Bell and Gossett devices.  Both of them can be used for balancing by reading the pressure drop across them, noting the valve position and then using the calibration curves.  The triple duty valves (TDV), in addition to allowing balancing, can function as a service valve and a check valve on the discharge of a pump.  I have included a couple of pictures I took that show what a TDV looks like on the inside.

The Greenheck installation and operating manual (I&OM) is fairly typical of what a fan I&OM looks like.  Of particular interest in the context of our class discussion is the information on page 6 titled RADIAL GAP, OVERLAP & WHEEL ALIGNMENT which illustrates the clearances between the inlet cone and fan wheel and the tolerances required to maintain the fan's design efficiency.

Here is the system diagram answer from our work on Jess's site.

And here is the node analysis that shows why the new chilled water pump did not work properly because it moved flow around the chillers vs. being in parallel with the other pumps and moving flow through the chillers.  Note that the 1,000 gpm flow rates shown are not the actual flow rates, rather I picked the number to make it easier to demonstrate the issue.  The design flow rates for each pump and chiller are 1,400 gpm but given the common headers and pressure drop due to flow, it is likely that the pumps operate at different flow rates depending on the number of pumps and chillers in operation.
Picture
Picture
This shows how the pump piping would need to be reconfigured to put it in the correct location from a system diagram standpoint.   Note that it would also be highly desirable to replace the piping at the pump that was sized based on the pump connection sizes vs. the flow rate it was delivering.   And also note that the existing headers where the flow from all pumps and/or all chillers combines is somewhat undersized for the required flow rate when all four chillers and pumps are running.
Picture
This link will take you to a draft of a 3DVista exercise that I am working on that focuses on several of the things that Jess is dealing with at her site.  It is still under development, but it will give you a way to re-visit the site if you wanted to look around again.

Currently, it shows the CHW piping and system diagram.  But I am working on something with the net positive suction head issue and also something with the air handling systems we saw.   The link should update as I develop the exercise and republish the content, so you may want to check back every-once-in-a-while.
