ERDC 2020 RCx Academy

This page is where I will place resources and follow-up materials for the ERDC 202 RCx Academy Class I am helping to support.

2020-05-07 Kick-off Session

The following files support the session this morning.  I believe the file names are self explanatory, but let me know if you have questions.  The cooling tower model we were using is not on the site yet, so I have provided that below if you want to play with it.  But the chilled water plant model on the site is current and can be found on the Chilled Water Plant Scoping Exercise and on the Chilled Water Plant System Diagram Exercise page.  If you want to try your hand at the "Easter Egg Hunt", you will find everything you need on the Bureaucratic Affairs Building Scavenger Hunt page.
Finally, if you want to read the Energy Conservation is an Ethic paper that I mentioned, you will find it along with other very useful things that Bill Coad wrote on the Bill Coad's Writings page of the website.

The zip file contains the files I used in this morning's session.  There is a supporting information folder that includes the mixed air temperature calculation spreadsheet I used (also available on the Mixed Air Calculations tool page of the website), the spreadsheet with the ball room load calculation in it and the ASHRAE cooling load temperature differential (CLTD) tables in it, which can be used to do a manual, hour by hour load estimate.
Note that the PowerPoint slides have slides that show the calculations we did in class in case you are interested.  We were going pretty quickly at the time.
In addition, an number of resources for doing piping calculations were mentioned. They included:
  • Practical Plumbing Design Guide by James Church
  • Piping System Fundamentals by Ray T. Hardee
  • Flow of Fluids through Valves, Fittings and Pipes (a.k.a. Crane Technical Paper No. 410)
You can find both new and used copies of these on the internet. I believe several of them area also available as a .pdf.

The file to the left contains updated slides from the session yesterday that now includes the compressor heat rejection calculation, which I forgot to include in the answers yesterday.
The slides we used to discuss economizers can be found on the Pacific Energy Center Design Performance and Commissioning Issues class page under the Economizers topic.  All of the class materials are posted there.  The slides are in the file labeled pdf_presentations.zip.

2020-05-19 Heating and Cooling Systems

The following files support the session this morning and also include the follow up information. There were a lot more things to do than time to do them, so I suspect we will revisit these materials later-on in one of the open office hours sessions that exist down the road.  Meanwhile, let me know if there is something you see in here that you have questions on and we can get together and address them.

The files to the left support the session I did yesterday.   The PowerPoint slides have slides inserted with the answers to the exercise we did so you have that information.
The model I was using was a specialized version of the one that I have shared with the CERL team, primarily to allow me to flip between different gauge readings for the evaporator pump test.
So I have shared that model below so you have it if you want to look at it or simply want to use it moving forward.

One caveat' in that regard is that I did not have the time to adjust all of the pressure gauge readings for each of the test modes.   So, the gauges on the chiller evaporator will not read quite right for any mode other than the as found (throttled) mode.  I will fix that soon and the difference is not huge for the wide open vs. throttled mode.   But for the dead head mode, the evaporator pressure drop should be zero and right now, it will not show up that way.

The spreadsheet file to the left is something we did not actually use but it may be helpful for you to organize an impromptu test like the pump test we did in the plant.  I am sure we will talk about functional testing more at some point.

The spreadsheet file to the left is the spreadsheet that I developed and plotted the system curve with. The chart shows up in the answer slide, but this will give you the actual "math" if you want to look at that.

These are the slides from the office hours session and include answer slides.  The slides I opened to show the stuff about gauge accuracy and wear rings are from the PEC
Pumps, Design, Performance and Commissioning issues class
;  the Pump Basics and Pump Curves modules specifically.
The files below are a test Jay and I did to see if we could solve the recording problem.  They are of no particular interest to anyone other than Jay.  This is just a way for me to get them to him.

2020-06-03 Air-Side Systems

These are the slides I used in class today.  The .pdf is the same as the .pptx but much smaller because it does not have the embedded video in it that exists in the .pptx file.  Note that these slides include answer slides and also two more images that you will need if you want to try to office hours session challenge.

These two files are the Le Conte AHU model if you want to play with it along with the spreadsheet that has the test data from the testing we did.  The image to the left is my "four-in-one" tool that I used for the test, which you can purchase from Omega Engineering.

These two spreadsheets are economizer examples I was using, including the perfect economizer plot.  FYI, you could take the one with the perfect economizer plot on it, strip out my data and use it to analyze your own economizer.   The PowerPoint file is the presentation I used to explain how the plot is derived and is basically the same as what is used in your RCxU video on the topic.

The to the below is a new version of the PowerPoint from the office hours session with the answer included.   I also mentioned an Energy Design Resources design brief that discusses techniques you can use to bring an energy efficiency focus to the schematic and design development phases of a project.  You will find that brief on the Energy Design Resources page;  it is the file named improving_mechanical_system_energy_efficiency_-_final.pdf.
