Induction Principles
These videos were developed by the Pacific Energy Center to support the On-Demand content on induction motor principles that can be accessed from the On Demand page of the website.

This is the first video in the series. In it, I use a magnet, a piece of copper pipe, and a multi-meter to demonstrate how a magnetic field will induce current flow in a conductor. Its an experiment you could repeat at home if you wanted to or let your kids use as a science project. Personally, in junior high school, this experiment led me to a successful science project and one of my first technical mentoring experience, something I share in a blob post titled Mentoring and Thinking Outside the Box. |

In this second video, I take the induction experiment a step further and hook my meter up to an old washing machine motor and demonstrate how spinning the armature of the motor actually generates a current in the field of the motor. |
