Cooling Tower Level Control Model Exercise

This exercise uses two different models, one for the cooling towers, which are on the roof of the elevator machine room level of a Hotel, and the other which is the space below, where the bypass valve and level control panel are located.   The teams are given the models and then work through a string of questions that cause them to discover common cooling tower issues like how nonsymetrical piping can cause basin levels to be different and how at some point, if you reduce the flow too much relative to a cell's rating, you will not achieve good distribution over the fill.  They even can trace out the level control wiring to figure out how the level control system works.

Finding Implementation Exercise

This exercise looks at what you need to develop to implement a finding.   It builds off of the 1st and 3rd self study exercise where a pump optimization opportunity is identified.  It turns out that the most desirable implementation is to install a right sized pump because the Owner was already planning on adding a redundant pump as part of a Cap Ex program to improve the reliability of the plant so that it would be an N+1 plant.  

As a result, the optimization savings only need to cover the incremental cost difference between matching the existing (oversized) pump or installing a best efficiency selection.   The model shows the installed pump and is used as a tool to help the attendees understand what the scope of work would need to include, what the costs will be, etc.
